Utah Division of Wildlife Services
Excellent bird watching – over 200 species have been documented. Bike riding. Hunting following state regulations. Newly renovated Great Salt Lake Nature Center.
Not only are most of Utah's remaining wetlands located along the Wasatch front, so is 80% of Utah's population. Expanding urban areas are rapidly encroaching on northern Utah's remaining wetlands. Farmington Bay WMA, is uniquely situated to tell the story of the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem and its relationship to nearby human development.
Despite its urban proximity, Farmington Bay is teeming with wildlife, plant life, and diverse geographical features. Located in the heart of the wetlands ecosystem, the Nature Center provides wetlands classrooms where teachers and students can experience hands-on learning. Here, students can explore the varied uses and characteristics of the Lake, its wildlife and wetlands, and the potential for sustained coexistence between the natural and man-made worlds.
Besides bird and nature watching, there are miles and miles of biking and hiking trails. The "Short Loop" at the south end is perfect for a family with pre-teen children -- the trail is absolutely flat and straight, the surface is smooth for easy riding, there's plenty of little ponds filled with birds, and the distance (6.3 miles total) is bearable for younger legs. The short loop is closed to cars.
